RC Plane Workshop

A radio-controlled aircraft (often called RC aircraft or RC plane) is a small flying machine that is controlled remotely by an operator on the ground using a hand-held radio transmitter. The transmitter communicates with a receiver within the aircraft that sends signals to servomechanisms (servos) which move the control surfaces based on the position of joysticks on the transmitter. The control surfaces, in turn, affect the orientation of the plane. The workshop is split in to different phases as follows,

Basics and Familiarization


  • Aerodynamics fundamentals for flying objects
  • Aircraft stability and control
  • Selection of electronics components and their connections in detail (dc motor, ESC, servos, battery etc.)
  • Selection of propellers
  • Introduction to aircraft control surfaces and their functions
  • Brief discussion on functioning of radio transmitter and receiver

Designing and Fabrication


  • Lecture on aircraft designing procedures (which includes selection of airfoil shape, wing, their positions, power pod, control surface area, etc.)
  • Selection of building materials
  • Tips to keep the model weight as minimum as possible
  • Cutting methods and building tips
  • Completing the electric circuit inside the plane
  • Binding and programming transmitter and receiver
  • Guide to make rc plane components and assemble them together

Flying and activities


  • Rechecking the connections of electronics parts
  • Checking the control surface throws and direction of movement as per transmitter control input
  • Checking the propeller direction of rotation
  • Transmitter range check
  • Checking the aircraft flying characteristics and find out the areas need to improve (or the mistakes while building )
  • Learn to do the modifications
